Counseling For Women With ADHD

If you’ve spent years feeling overwhelmed, disorganized, anxious, or like you’re constantly trying to “keep up,” you’re not alone.

Many women with ADHD go undiagnosed until adulthood because their symptoms often look different than the stereotypes we’ve all heard about.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

It’s not your fault, and it’s not that you’re just not trying hard enough. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder with a genetic component, meaning that you are born with it and it is a highly heritable trait. People with ADHD have low levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the areas of the brain that regulate attention, activity, and impulsivity. This means that for someone with ADHD, things like starting a project, switching gears, or making decisions can feel like a real uphill battle—especially if the task is repetitive, boring, or someone else’s priority.

ADHD is Often Missed in Females

ADHD is subcategorized into three types: impulsive/hyperactive, inattentive, and combined. While sometimes diagnosed in childhood, it is often missed in children who are not outwardly hyperactive, who are more rule-conforming, and who don’t fit the stereotypical presentation. The typical features of ADHD are an ongoing pattern of a combination of behaviors such as trouble sitting still, impulsivity, being easily distracted, and difficulty keeping on task.

Women Are Easily Overlooked

ADHD was historically studied in boys, so women with ADHD are often missed because their hyperactive behaviors are often inwardly focused and look more like daydreaming, being spacey, shy, or introverted, or forgetfulness. It may feel like anxiety. If they are outwardly hyperactive, it may look like talkativeness or social extraversion.
